The Bellerophon Project – Mental Abscess EP Review

Looking for a fresh groove and inspiration? Look no further! The Bellerophon Project has packaged enough of each into their Mental Abscess EP to get you through the work week and into next weekend. This powerful duo from Munich has put a tasteful twist on rhythmically influenced prog metal by spicing the genre up with hails to a more laxed and carefree compositional style. These guys wrap heavy, classy, intricacy, and mindfulness into a delicious prog-uritto.

Ample amounts of heaviness and unconventionality can be found sprawled across this entire release, ranging from pseudo swing beats in “Crystal Lattice” to harp-esque strings that sound like some sort of weird dark Legend of Zelda secret unlock tone in “Kerkyra.” There is a lot beneath the surface of this release, and each section sounds as if a lot of time was spent on compositional value and attention to detail. There is no fear of employing a multitude of soundscapes either, which is demonstrated in “Chrystal Lattice” and “Hydra” with orchestral synth and otherworldly melodies that open up the upper registers.

“Hydra” does a good job at portraying a generalized idea of what The Bellerophon Project is all about. Elements in the song include everything from poly-rhythmic percussion to well sculpted groove shifts and clean, ambient, and delicate clean sections. As good as this song is, it is still only a fraction of what Mental Abscess contains. In addition to the intricate guitar bursts, The Bellerophon Project illustrates a certain chameleonism in playing style, including everything between Tosin style riffage in “Hyrda” and “Mental Abscess” to unsullied heaviness in “The Endless Immersion.”

All this praise and glory and I can’t help but notice there is one major problem with this album: it’s not long enough. However, that might be also be a strong point. The Bellerophon Project has given us just enough of a taste to wet our whistle without over saturating our palate. There truly is something here for everyone, and this duo is one to keep your eyes and ears on. I can see big things in their future if we all help them get there. Take a few minutes to head over to their Facebook page and give them a like, share their stuff, and spread the word!

Mental Abscess will be released June 22nd. Check back here or keep an eye on the It Djents Facebook page for information on how and where to download.
