Expect some great music! Post-rock is always one of those genres which never disappoints, because every year is packed with at least a handful of great records. Some of the best are collected in this feature!
Ranges – The Gods Of The Copybook Headings
Uplifting melodies, a good amount of roughness and great sound.
The Khost – Stella Maris
I could also put this record in the upcoming math rock feature, but I get a stronger post-rock feeling from Austin, Texas based outfit The Khost. Dreamy and ethereal, with some calming vocal layers and interesting composition.
Square Peg Round Holes – Juniper
Really awesome electronic-based post-rock record. Beautiful soundscapes and ideas.
Downriver Dead Men Go – Tides
Very interesting feeling, intense melancholic atmosphere, with a little touch of dark/gothic rock.
Overhead, The Albatross – Learning To Growl
One of the best records of 2017. Incredibly beautiful, epic and intense. This record manages to showcase one of post-rock biggest benefits: Creating wide soundscapes while being totally intimate.
Seas Of Years – The Evershifting Fields
Wonderful melodies. Again, it’s important for a post-rock record to create intense soundscapes. Check.
Sioum – Yet Further
A little bit more dissonant and bulky than your usual post-rock, but that’s exactly what makes this record so compelling. It’s the stylistic device to the rough beauty of this record.
After Osmosis – What Do You See When You Dream
Dark and spacey. A record about dreaming, loneliness and being a chimpanzee in a spaceship. Your life is trivial compared to the cosmos, but every breathe counts.
Wang Wen – Sweet Home, Go
One of the great Chinese post-rock bands. The story around this record is really great, so if you are interested, search for it. You won’t regret it. Wang Wen are masters in creating claustrophobic but beautiful atmospheres and this record is no exception.
Statua – Celestial Bleakness
Another record which could also be on the electronic feature, but Celestial Bleakness creates such a deep and strong feeling and comprehensive experience which fits way better on here!
Shipwreck Karpathos – Bring Down The Sky
There is a certain crisp and roughness in this music, which caught me and never released me. Fantastic album.
65daysofstatic – No Man’s Sky: Music For An Infinite Universe
I’ve never played the game, but 65daysofstatic are awesome, and so is this album. This aspect about No Man’s Sky has to be cool.
Trevor Gordon Hall – Late Night With Headphones, Vol 1
Trevor Gordon Hall is more known for his fingerstyle acoustic guitar work, so I was very surprised when I’ve heard this record. I’m a fan of his music, but this is his best release so far. This is pure soundporn. Like the album title says: Get a good pair of headphones and listen to this amazing record.
Zhaoze – Intoxicatingly Lost
Technically, this album came out in 2015, but the western re-release in 2016. That’s a good excuse to put this wonderful piece of art. Post rock mixed with Chinese folklore!
Mountain – Evolve
I have a sweet spot in my heart for harsher, rougher post-rock bands. And an extra big spot for Mountain.
Oddarang – Agartha
This extremely interesting blend of drone, ambient, dark jazz and post-rock is a fascinating experience from start to finish.
Artificial Waves – Heavy. Deep. Sad. Ironic
Wonderful record from this Russian band. It has a really special atmosphere, stretching from stoner over God Is An Astronaut to gothic.
Meniscus – Refractions
A band which has the potential to be one of the most important post-rock bands out there. Compelling songwriting and exuberant creativity makes this band a MUST LISTEN for every post-rock fan.
Caspian – Castles High, Marble Bright
It’s Caspian. What did you expect? Not putting them on this list? Ridiculous.
Across Waters – A House Not Built With Hands
Beautifully cinematic and ambient. A nice little surprise I’ve found while crawling through Bandcamp. This is not extraordinary or extremely unique, just well executed and appealing!
Bateleur – Bateleur
This is simply breathtakingly amazing. This album is so rich of sounds and ideas. Post-rock mixed with jazz, electronic and experimental elements. A journey.
