GRIM AND/OR FROSTBITTEN: Records To Brave The Cold (Part 4)

Вітаю, bonjour and herzlich willkommen to another episode of Grim and/or Frostbitten! Before we finally get to blow this mess of a year  to smithereens tomorrow (like it deserves), here are the favorite winter records of the members of Belarusian progressive death metal outfit Irreversible Mechanism!

Yaroslav Korotkin

‘This time of the year is a good opportunity to be at home. Difficult weather affects any active entertainments, excluding winter sports. It is good time to drink hot chocolate and listen to music, watch nice films and sometimes go for a walk.’

Sunless Rise – Unrevealed

Music from the Russian glaciers. This music reminds me the snow-covered valley without any signs of life.

The Cure – Disintegration

A long time ago, I watched “The Crow” and this song was placed in my memory forever as a December song. Also, The Cure has Disintegration with similar sounds and strong songs too.

Wardruna – Runaljod Yggdrasil

The best soundtrack for a winter journey to the mountains. There is something magical in that sound.

Apocalyptica – Cult

The first sympho band that I’ve heard, this song make my skin freeze. Music without borders.

Ihsahn – After

The legendary master from a Scandinavian frost desert. He is inspired by winter from album to album, a man of the North.

Ne Obliviscaris – Portal Of I

This is a band from one of the hottest countries, but their music is purely winter-minded.

The Day Of Remission – Charity Dies

I remember that it was recorded here in Minsk during a cold, long winter.

Vladislav Nekrash

‘I think winter is the best time for music. You can search for inspiration and, if the weather is not good, spend your time composing and practicing. Here is the list of my “winter” songs and records that mean a lot for me during this period.’

Emperor – Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk

Though I listen to this cult band throughout the year, I consider winter to be the best period to feel this music’s atmosphere and energy. By the way, Emperor announced a reunion for a few festivals in 2017 and it is great for the whole metal scene, at least to my mind.

Setentia – Darkness Transcend

Good choice for winter because it is as dark and cold as a fresh winter wind. I suggest everyone to check out their album released only a month ago.

Silence Lies Fear – Future: The Return

Band from hot Azerbaijan helps you to remember summer time. Awesome quality and good energy. Nice to add them to your playlist during your winter vacations.

Denis Shvarts Project – Through the Universe

Cool instrumental music from Russia. I like to play some guitar solos at home before the rehearsals.

Dreamfall In Vain – Ressurection

I listen to this band while driving. Dark and vigorous music. Excellent choice for the winter period.

Andrey Parmon

‘Personally, winter is the period of a huge scope of thoughts, work and procrastination. It is a period of waiting and dreaming. It has a couple of unique feelings too, not only bad, depressive or melancholic. That is why my winter list is so spotty.’

Gojira – L’Enfant Sauvage

The long, dark and painful journey deep inside your mind, and you’re the only one who can hear the last and hopeless call of the Earth. Especially in winter, when the nature makes people play by its rules, it makes us close up and hide.

Black Light Burns – Lotus Island

Just like a great old horror movie. My personal musical favorite is “Elephant Man”.

Grizzly Knows No Remorse – Fat Glasses and the Leather Mustache

Lots of energy, humor and fun. It helps me to forget all of my problems. It makes you smile like a drunk man.

Steven Wilson – Hand. Cannot. Erase

It is a little piece of spring. So bright and colorful. Feels like lazy and sunny winter morning on the first of January.

Sylosis – Dormant Heart

Walk trough the dark forest under the moon, when the wolf’s howl is more terrifying than death. I remember that I was really waiting for this release. It reminds me of home in December, when I was really exhausted after work or rehearsal.

Pavel Semin

‘Winter is cold and dark time, but you also get some vacation time, so you can find something suitable for your mood – like music.’

Sadist – Season In Silence

The whole album comes with concept of winter. One of the best Sadist albums.

Anders & Jens Johansson, Allan Holdsworth – Heavy Machinery

Some fusion and classic music from the Johansson brothers and the legendary Allan Holdsworth. I think all of Allan’s music includes ice magic, but this track is associated with winter holidays in a big city.

Pete Peterson – Songs, These Are Songs

This track brings some Christmas atmosphere, mixed with outstanding musical ideas.

Follow Irreversible Mechanism on Facebook! Their latest record, Infinite Fields, was reissued last year by Blood Music, so you should definitely check that out if you haven’t already!

There you have it! Some really interesting picks in this one, I think. Since this is the last episode of Grim and/or Frostbitten for 2016, let me wish you a happy new year! Hopefully it will be just as full of musical discoveries and awesome records as this one was, which hardly makes up for the rest that happened, but hey. So let’s all celebrate New Year’s Eve tomorrow by peacefully blowing up some fireworks together, or, in the words of Bug Martini (my favorite webcomic, btw), showing 2017 ‘what we do with crummy timespans’.  See you all next year!
