In the build up to the release of their debut EP, Sharp Turns in Dark Tunnels, Brisbane-based metallers Sum of Us have released a brand new song and video titled “First Yawn”, and It Djents has the exclusive premiere.
“First Yawn” is four minutes of hard-hitting heaviness, with some fiery guitar work, great vocals and phenomenal drumming, all made in the style of bands like Periphery and Monuments. It serves as a follow up to Sum of Us‘s debut single “Forrest”, which was unveiled only a couple of months ago.
Regarding themes of this new song, vocalist Bryce Carleton had this to say:
‘”First Yawn” discusses the paradox of the drive to understand one’s true self while releasing that any attempt at this is only pushing the end goal out of reach. The track attempts to capture the point of realization that nothing is needed to be gained or lost to become who we truly are’.
Though Sum of Us is a relatively fresh outfit, the band is actually comprised of regulars to the Brisbane metal scene, with members of bands such as Osaka Punch, Kodiak Empire and Red In Tooth. Their experience certainly shines through in their music, and the passionate leanness of “Forrest” and “First Yawn” is the right kind of appetizer for things to come.
