And another band who’s gearing up to release a new album on October 20 unveiled a single today! Amenra, who will be adding the sixth installment to their ongoing Mass series of records, dropped “Plus Près De Toi” (which translates to ‘closer to you’) via Metal Hammer; you can listen to it below!
“Plus Près De Toi”…
…was inspired by a translation of the 19th-Century hymn “Nearer To God To Thee”. Amenra themselves had the following to say about it:
‘The song is about a profound longing, a sadness you carry within, the journey to come closer to the people, and things you loved and you miss.‘
And indeed this almost nine minute-long track sounds infused by an elegic yearning; the screams of vocalist Colin H. van Eeckhout carry a lot of that impression. As we’ve come to expect from Amenra, “Plus Près De Toi” combines crushing sludge riffing with a slow, meditative post-rock feel, creating a dense atmosphere that the band has honed to perfection over the course of their career. Even the song’s slowest moments, accompanied by clean vocals, are full of suspense and tragedy.
Closer to you, closer to our hearts
Attentive listeners may have caught on to the fact that the track is sung entirely in French (as if the title wasn’t hint enough). As to why that is, Amenra told Metal Hammer:
‘It made sense to write and sing in French,” they continue. Those words felt like they had a more poetic outcome than the English substitute. By using French and Flemish on this album, I felt like I could keep it a little closer to our hearts. It’s a part of our heritage.‘
If you aren’t hyped for the band’s new record after this single, you’re either deaf, heartless or straight-up dead inside; I’d say it’s safe to assume that Mass VI will be nothing but another stellar entry in their discography.
