If there was a band that unites the It Djents team more than any other, it is unarguably Coheed and Cambria. The New York progressive rock band has pushed the boundaries of musical storytelling ever further over eight albums, blurring prog rock, emo and metal together for music as ambitious as their lyrics. As such, we have been incredibly excited about the announcement of Vaxis – Act I: Unheavenly Creatures and release of first single “The Dark Sentencer”. The hype builds ever more with the album’s second single, and title track, “Unheavenly Creatures”, accompanied by a suitably sci-fi music video:
Sonically, the track mixes chiptune-esque synths before building into a more polished take on their early, emo-leaning part of their career. This quick, catchy track is a welcome contrast to the towering “The Dark Sentencer”. The epic accompanying music video seems to pull aesthetically from Starcraft, Saga and Star Wars, while seeming to reference the ‘planetary prison pits’ mentioned in the previous single.
