NEWS: The Faceless Drop New Single, “Digging The Grave”

Almost two weeks after The Faceless finally revealed the artwork to their highly-anticipated (and massively delayed) upcoming fourth studio album In Becoming A Ghost – due out on December 1 – they have now unleashed a new single upon the world, as they promised to do in the aforementioned announcement post earlier this month. It is called “Digging The Grave” (any joke about the title would be a very cheap shot at this point), and you can check it out below:

“Digging The Grave”…

…is the first new song off The Faceless‘ new album since they dropped “The Spiraling Void” back in September 2015. Since then, they’ve become more notorious for missing out on or dropping off tours than for their actual music, which is a shame, given the sheer quality of their past output. Let’s not dwell on that, though, and have a look at what this single has to offer.

Things get quite…weird on this one. There is, of course, the overarching tech-/prog-death vibe the band has become known and loved for, but I feel like the addition of vocalist Ken Sorceron (Abigail Williams) has led to a significant black metal influence finding its way into their sound. In fact, the instrumental, with its lightning-fast, technical riffs, orchestral swells and proggy tendencies, kind of sounds like a blackened version of something off Autotheism; perhaps that might be off-putting for some, but I do enjoy it. Sorceron competently fulfills the duty as unclean vocalist, accentuating the music with finesse while leaving his own mark on the The Faceless formula even when adopting tropes like the vocoder effect the band have been toying with in the past.

Other highlights are Michael Keene’s once more impressive clean vocals, and the usage of a flute in the song’s avant-garde/classic prog-leaning ending sections. One can only hope that “Digging The Grave” is the single that sets the standard for In Becoming A Ghost; where “Black Star” and “The Spiraling Void” haver been nothing but solid standard fare from the band, this track does actually shake things up a bit, and it’s way more interesting because of it. Let’s see what the beginning of December holds for us.
