You might remember that in 2016, a band going by the name of For The Oracle released one of the best début albums of the year with Kind Child. Now they’re back…kind of. Last year, they announced a change in band members and musical direction, culminating in The Yu-Yi Band being born. Instead of delivering the same progressive/alternative metal that first brought them into the collective consciousness of our scene, they now deal in a tasteful mélange of neo soul, jazz fusion and post-rock, as showcased in this iteration’s début single, “My Witness Is An Empty Sky (Bodies Between The Cat’s Eyes)”.
Check it out below:
This lengthily-titled song is taken from The Yu-Yi Band‘s upcoming album Postcards from St. Evenage, due out digitally on January 15. The video footage is taken from archived material from 2016 originally intended to accompany a For The Oracle track that never saw the light of day. Musically speaking, the song is as mellow and laid-back as they come, channelling a certain Nujabes vibe in the keys and horns, whilst the drums are more post-rock-oriented. It’s definitely an interesting track, and much more engaging than I saw coming, given the wholly different nature of the previous output of these musicians; perhaps I underestimated their prowess.
Anyway, make sure to follow The Yu-Yi Band on Facebook, and to check out their album once it drops. I for one am looking forward to it!
